I think every class should cover how the subjects learned in that class can be used in "real" world and that's what i've liked about the last few readings we've been assigned. We've studied cultures from Africa, India, New Guinea, and even the Youtube culture. However, very few of us are going to have to come in contact with indian or african villages( and if you do, more power to you). I liked the stories the writer gives in this section and most of all I liked how much i could relate to each of them in terms of what i expect to encounter in my life. I've had jobs where i've had to direct people as well as take orders from bosses and i could definitely identify with the writer when he notes what we expect from our bosses. And it was interesting to read and note the ways I acted similar to the old bosses and, as i read on, the ways i could improve my work as well as everyone elses production. I think it all just comes down to people taking the time to really listen and let go of their own preconceptions and realize that they really don't always know what is going on

When I first entered the class I asked myself, what does an anthropologist really do? What is in the job description for Anthropologist, and although these questions were answered fairly soon, this chapter really forces the bigger picture of anthropology. Anthropology offers a skill set that is not found elsewhere, and that is mainly characterized by ethnographic research. The ability to stand in a situation and learn from the inside out, to withhold judgement and learn as a student is a skill that can go quite far in life. Anthropologists take a walk in their shoes, literally, and attain a skill most people lack. Anthropology also has a little to do with problem solving. Like in the case of Susan, managers would keep doing nothing, but after she made the extra motion to gauge the problems of the company from those above she was able to better find a solution than past managers. If anything, anthropology offers a skill on perception and observation, the way we look at things and really this can be applied no matter what field of study someone is in.

When I first registered for a cultural anthropology class, I was not completely sure what to expect. What I did not anticipate, however, is how interesting and useful I would find the subject. This last chapter, entitled “Using Anthropology” has further convinced me of the benefits that anthropology can provide in today’s world. I found it interesting that so many different careers utilized the study and tools of anthropology in a variety of day-to-day activities. The depiction of Susan, the office manager, and her situation in her new position showed a side of anthropology that most people are not familiar with. I believe that the use of ethnographic research and learning about ones subjects must be recognized and utilized more in today’s ever changing society. The chapter made very clear that before Susan made an effort to get to know those who were working for her and obtaining their opinions on what was wrong the company, managers were continually coming through, yet nothing was ever getting done. Anthropology and the ethnographic methods which it employs is an important and useful source of information and can be applied effectively throughout a wide range, including businesses, organizations, governments, military, education, and more.
